Comcast Under Fire From FCC for Blocking Torrent Traffic

The ISP (Internet Service provider) Comcast is under fire from the FCC for blocking or throtteling down traffic to and from P2P (Peer-to-peer) file sharing applications (like BitTorrent). P2P file sharing applications make up as much as 30-50% of all internet traffic, and ISP's look to decrease their network load by using technologies inside their switches that can detect and block P2P traffic.

This violates the FCC regulatory requirements that ISP's should allow open access to their networks to all types of applications, and not to pick-and-chose what is allowed and what isn't. Also, Comcast did it secretly without notifying their customers, which worstens their situation in legal terms and in terms of public relations, as angry customers abandon them.

FCC 700MHz Auction in the USA

The auction for the 700MHz band in the USA ended 18.March.2008 with the largest 2 operators winning the bulk of the spectrum: AT&T (current GSM/UMTS) and Verizon (current CDMA/EVDO). Both operators plan to launch the 4G technology "LTE" on this band beginning sometime around 2010 to 2012.

For Verizon, this is a strategic shift away from their 3GPP2 track of CDMA/EVDO and onto the 3GPP track.

3GPP: (2G=GSM), (3G=UMTS), (4G=LTE)

3GPP2: (2G=CDMA), (3G=EVDO), (4G=UMB)

This move was mainly influenced by Vodafone, a large shareholder in Verizon, in order for them to be more aligned with the rest of the world, as 85% of the world uses 3GPP cellular technologies, and only 15% of the worlds networks are 3GPP2.
